I found some great ceramic pottery vessels at a thrift store. I didn’t like how they looked aesthetically but I loved their shape and thought I could make them fit into my home better. I went to town refinishing them, read on to see what they looked like before and how I transformed them!
I found 2 ceramic pottery vessels at a thrift store. As you can tell, they were not really my style. The colors and the mosaic pieces were screaming outdated but I loved the shape of them and thought I could try to make them fit into my home better.
I started out spray painting the vases a flat black to see where to start and how the paint covered the piece. I didn’t like the results so you can skip this step! I then decided to add spackle to the entire vessel. I wanted to do this to fill in some of the high and low points created by the mosaic tiles. Don’t be afraid to get messy with this, perfection is not key to this step.
The next step, after the spackle dries, is to lightly sand it. I wanted imperfection but not totally messy. So I sanded down the entire piece, not to make it smooth but to make it feel a little more cohesive.
After I was happy with how it looked after sanding, I grabbed the flat black spray paint again and covered the entire vessel with the black paint. Top to bottom, two coats.
I waited for the paint to dry and then did my go-to…rubbed a little dirt on it. I took some dirt, added water to it, rubbed it all around the pottery. I then waited for it to fully dry and then went to work sanding the piece down again. I wanted to sand heavier in some spots so the white spackle showed through giving it that aged look.
I just love how these vases turned out. They look old, worn, imperfect, just how I like it.
They turned out beautiful and fit into my home wonderfully. Now head on out to a thrift store, pick up your own and Rework some pottery!
