This dated basement bathroom got a vintage inspired facelift that mixes old and new for a perfectly moody space.
We started with a dated bathroom space. I wanted to make this space fit with the rest of the house and mix in old and new elements while designing it.
We removed the tub and shower surround, took out the vinyl flooring, and the vanity. The vanity was reused in the kids secret playroom as a play kitchen (go check out that project, you will love the transformation). I wanted to keep the original footprint to save on cost and waste.
After we took out all of the old tub and shower surround, Mike reframed the shower walls.
We added new insulation and sloped the shower floor for correct water drainage.
Mike added waterproof drywall as well as all the waterproofing steps needed for proper shower waterproofing.
We taped, mudded, and did more waterproofing.
I painted multiple layers of RedGard into the shower space, which is a waterproofing membrane. I think we are all done waterproofing now!!
Now we get to do the fun part! Tile time!! Good news, Mike and I make a great team. He does all the cutting and math and I do all the tile laying.
I wanted to use porcelain tile for the space because it’s one of the most eco friendly tiles you can use. I chose a distressed black and white tile. I feel like this is a timeless design that is a beautiful transition with adding old and new elements.
I wanted a simple wall tile so it didn’t compete with the floor tile. I wanted the floors to be the star of the show. I wanted a concrete feeling tile that had a natural, flat, distressed finish. I once again chose a porcelain 12 x 24 tile from. I splurged on the floor tile so I wanted to reign in cost by choosing a less expensive shower tile.
I chose a terracotta grout for the flooring and a white grout for the wall tile.
I used a vintage dresser for the new vanity that I had previously added to the space, as well as a new sink and faucet. I reused a vintage mirror I had and bought some inexpensive wall sconces to flank the mirror.
By adding vintage pieces and vintage inspired pieces, it makes the old feel new and the new feel old. (Paint color is Current Mood by Clare Paint)
I found a vintage bookshelf and filled it with antique pieces. Take your time designing and decorating your spaces with found items. It will mean more to you, is better for the environment, and better for your pocketbook too!
I found an old vase I had and painted it black and rubbed a little dirt on it to make it feel old. This artwork, frame, and accessories are all vintage pieces from local antique stores.
We live in the woods and unfortunately we get mice in the house sometimes. I wanted to have a little fun with it by adding a gold mouse doorstop to the space for a little laugh.
Velvet drapery panels were added to soften and deepen the space. There is a floor length shower curtain behind these for practical use.
